Volunteer opportunity to carry out walkover surveys along the beautiful Rivers of the Yorkshire Dales.

In partnership with the Dales to Vales River Network we are developing projects to improve rivers throughout the Dales. Using desk based studies and Water Framework Directive classifications from the Environment Agency, we identify which rivers are ecologically poor ands at risk of further decline (Further information can be found in the evidence packs and on the issues pages of this website).

The next step is to gather information about the river and identify where there are particular issues or problems. Walkover surveys are one of the best ways to gain a visual overview of a catchment and highlight any issues. This enables us to gauge potential projects sites and support funding bids.

Volunteers are in-valuable to the trust, allowing us to survey a much wider area and often generating a local perspective; we would not be able to do this on our own! Additionally, if you are a landowner we would love to hear from you too; these are your rivers and we would like your say.

Surveys will be carried out between October 2015 and March 2016; with the flexibility to carry out a survey in your own time, whether this be regularly during the week, or a one off at weekends. Training will be provided, but we do ask that you have basic map reading skills and access to your own transport.

Currently, we are planning surveys on:

Gilling/ Holme Beck

Scorton Beck

Bedale/ Newton/ Burton Beck

Collingham Beck

Mill Dike in South Milford

This is a great way to get out into the Yorkshire Dales, have some fun, and help protect our river networks for the future.
